21+ Science of Alcohol event – January 22

Shake, stir, and think your way through an unforgettable evening at the Science Center of Iowa’s 21+ Mixology night! In partnership with our Mind Matters traveling exhibit, this hands-on experience blends the science of perception, chemistry, and neuroscience with the art of crafting the perfect cocktail (or mocktail).

Step into interactive presentation where you’ll explore how ingredients interact, why flavors change with context, and how the brain interprets taste, aroma, and sensation. Guided mixology demos with head bartender/mixologist, Rex Schulze from Splash in Downtown Des Moines, will walk you through creating signature drinks while uncovering the science behind balance, measurement, and sensory experience. Enjoy a lively, social atmosphere filled with experimentation, discovery, and creativity as you mix, sip, and learn. Whether you’re a cocktail enthusiast or just curious about the science behind the bar, this night promises a spirited blend of education and entertainment.

Drink Lab Add-on

Shake things up with our special Drink Lab! Guests can choose from two identical sessions, each featuring a hands-on cocktail-making experience. You’ll learn one delicious cocktail recipe that everyone will create together, plus see demonstrations of two different mixology techniques you can use to elevate your drinks at home.

The lab will be led by Ellie Rastetter, a mixologist, bartender, and owner of Rockwell City’s Spirited Events who specializes in using fresh ingredients to create fun, flavorful cocktails. Whether you’re a cocktail enthusiast or simply looking to try something new, the Drink Lab offers a fun and approachable way to mix, learn, and sip.
Times offered: 6:45 and 8:15
Cost: $15
